How can a man cleanse his way? By taking heed unto Your word. And we saw in James where James says, "Be a doer of the word and not a hearer only." He is saying once you see from the word of God who you are and see your need for Christ, that you need to respond. You need to realize who you are and not be a forgetful hearer. And so also, the psalmist sees that he needs to respond to the word of God. That is how a man cleanses his way. Not by walking perfectly because we cannot; but by responding to His word our way as cleansed. Jesus said to the disciples, "You are already clean through the word that I have spoken unto you."

Now humility is the word that describes that condition that you are at when afflictions strike and knock everything out from underneath you. It is a low condition, a condition of affliction. The place that you arrive at in the trials that demonstrate to you how much you need the Lord. That is what humility is. Humility is not telling you how rotten I am, that is pride. Humility is just the realization of my need for the Lord, which comes about through trials.
